Celestial Tattoo Ideas That Bring The Sun, Moon & Stars To Life
If you’re on the hunt for a great mix of celestial tattoo ideas, I’m your girl because I have a couple already that I just love!
Hand tattoos and celestial tattoos are right up my alley.
I have both hands tattooed, but my left hand is all celestial icons and images. It started with a half sun/moon design on the side of my hand, then stars, then a lightning bolt, and it only continued with more stars and constellations. These are some of my favorite ideas to inspire your search.

I love the beauty in a simple celestial tattoo. While they may be some of the most basic around, I think they’re also some of the most stunning. Simple, elegant, and inspired by nature like a sunrise tattoo always is. Some of my personal favorites.
Looking for some sun and moon matching tattoos for you and your bestie? That would be a fun option as well.
Sun Tattoo Ideas
The sun is one of the most beautiful pieces I’ve seen tattooed. The detail and design that goes into some of these sun tattoos is so stunning, and feels like a real piece of art.
1. Red Faced
I love these faces on a sun and moon piece. And in the red ink? Even cooler. I’m obsessed with this piece.
2. Wavy Rays
How cool are these wavy rays?!
3. Serenity
The serenity on this sun’s face is stunning. This makes me want to get this exact tattoo as a reminder to take a deep breath and relax.
4. Low-Key
This thin little sun is the sweetest little tattoo. We have more minimal tattoos coming your way later in the post, and they’re all as precious as this one.
5. Negative Space
The negative space in this one is a really cool element.
6. Tribal Details
Little tribal details around the outside of the rays makes for a unique piece.
7. Gradient
The gradient along each ray reminds me of heat radiating. What a cool detail!
8. Clouds
The compass shape and clouds covering the sun in a Asian art style makes this different from a plain and simple sun tattoo.
Moon Tattoos
A moon tattoo is a great celestial tattoo idea that is calming and soothing. This is a really great tattoo if you need a reminder to stop and take a deep breath.
9. Color Gradient
Using the colors of the night sky to fill in the moon shape is stunning. I love the detail.
10. Realism Crescent Moon
The realism for this crescent moon is easily one of the most breathtaking designs for a moon tattoo that I have seen. It’s small, but the unique design and the detail work in the small space is so impressive.
11. Man In The Moon
We all know the story of the man in the moon, and here he is, shining bright.
12. Finger Piece
The same small and detailed crescent done on a finger is even more impressive.
13. Heavy Cartoon
The heavy lining on the moon and clouds is a statement piece, even just being an outline work.
14. Waves
Waves controlled by the moon.
15. Blushing Companions
Staring each other in the face, but rarely do they meet in person.
16. Shoulder Of The Sky
Placing a solar system on your shoulder is so beautiful. And the dainty style of these just make it even better.
Stars Fillers For Celestial Tattoos
Stars are where I find myself landing when I need a new tattoo or a filler. I love just a little twinkle. These butterfly stars tattoos are a dun take on the concept bringing it down back to earth a bit.
17. Just A Sparkle
Sparkling just a little bit on the side of your arm.
18. Trail Of Stars
Leave a trail of stars everywhere you go. This design is just magical.
19. Different Designs
Each star has their own design pattern here, just like every actual start is just a little different from the next.
20. Dainty
A tiny little star somewhere low-key is stunning.
21. Dancing Star
This happy little guy just looks like the most fun tattoo to have!
22. North Star
A beautiful, large, North Star.
23. Hand Pieces
All over the hands and fingers, and these stars are such cute details. I adore this look. I’m a little biased though, this is what my hands look like!
24. Glowing Aura
The aura of the star is bright and colorful, and such a fun idea for a star tattoo.
Minimalist Options
Minimal celestial tattoos are so precious, and these are some of my favorites. A little goes a long way with some of these styles, especially if this is your first or one of your first tattoos.
25. Beams
The most subtle beams make for such pretty details.
26. Sketch Outline
This is so unique, I’m in love with the line work.
27. Fine Detailing
The fine detailing of this solar system is too perfect. This takes minimalist to the next level.
28. So Fine
So fine that I almost missed it.
29. Ornament Sun
The dots and lines are easy details to commit to, especially if you don’t want something super flashy.
30. Linking Moon And Sun
Looking for a tattoo to match your S.O or your bestie? This is a little bit of a different take from the classic moon and sun tattoo.
31. Tiny Moon Phases
32. Contrast
This one is so whimsical, I’m obsessed with the dark and light combination.
33. Fine Line
The line work on this is what makes it minimal, even when the design doesn’t. It’s all about balance.
Finding Inspiration In Nature
Nature is the best source of inspiration for art, and is usually the number one inspiration for tattoos. Whether it’s animals, trees, flowers, or celestial beings, there’s a very high possibility that a tattoo is nature focused.
Do you find yourself inspired by nature? By the moon? By the stars?

Celestial tattoo fans likely started with something simple, if I had to guess. So wherever you are on your tattoo journey, there’s something in this post for you. From minimal to elaborate, there’s a sun, moon, or stars that you need.
I always love taking these ideas and collaborating with my artist too. It makes it a piece of art that they get to work on versus just a stencil of someone else’s idea.
Find inspiration in nature and have fun with these celestial tattoo ideas!
