43 Bold & Beautiful Spinal Tattoo Ideas for Women and Men
Inside: 43 Spinal tattoo ideas for your next back tattoo adventures.
A particular style of tattoo has been on my mind lately… Spinal tattoos. One of my favorite details when it comes to tattoo planning is placement. When it comes to doing something new and cool with my ink, it’s always the first thing I think about. “Where do I want this one?”
And something about venturing off of the more traditional spots for tattoos has been catching my eye, especially along the back. I think it’s a gorgeous placement, really elongating your back and finding intentionality in the exact placement of it.

Not only being placed on the spine, but if you’re into realistic pieces, a tattoo of your spine is looking quite cool to me too.
There’s so much variety in this category, it’s almost overwhelming to try to nail down your next idea. So I’m excited to explore these concepts and share with you these 43 spinal tattoo ideas to aid your search for inspiration.
How Much Do Spine Tattoos Hurt?
Also when planning placement, it is quite important to think about the pain levels associated with the location of your choosing.
It may not be a big deal or deal breaker to some, but to others I know it can be a deterrent from your ideal tattoo spot. So I’m here with the tea on pain levels before we get to the part with the gorgeous artworks that will convince you anyway.
The spine is a particularly painful spot for tattoos, as expected. Not only is it a bony spot with thin skin, your spine also carries lots of nerve endings, so this also adds to the sensitivity.
If you’re not new to the tattoo realm, I don’t think it will be too big of a deal to manage. But if this is one of your first few, you might want to keep this in mind.
I’m always on the side of “pain is temporary” so I would still encourage you to get your dream piece if this is it, but just know what you’re expecting before going in!
How Do Spine Tattoos Age?
Lucky for all of us that are interested in this placement, your spine, though at the literal center of your life and body, isn’t as apt to change and stretch and grow as the rest of your body.
Obviously there will be changes with weight change over the years and sun exposure and other typical factors to the aging of tattoos, but there is nothing to expect with your spine that will add to or make this placement more difficult to upkeep as life continues with your sick new spine tattoo.
As always, check in with your artist for their recommended care regimen. Keep out of the sun as much as you can, use your SPF… I know I don’t have to tell you, but who would I be to make tattoo recommendations if I didn’t?
Now, let’s get to the fun stuff.
