Inside: 51 American traditional tattoos for the classic tattoo fan ready to dive into this category.

American traditional tattoos are always in style, and this year, the trend is even more in-demand. Minimalist is always cool too, but there’s a new wave of the classic tattoo style that started it all.

Four examples of four traditional tattoos

We’ll dive into everything there is to know about American traditional tattoo styles: what it is, how it’s unique, and all the different ideas to give you the coolest next tattoo.

What is the American traditional tattoo style

What Is The American Traditional Tattoo Style?

Think back to the first time you saw someone who was truly heavily tatted, or had some classic tattoo pieces on their body.

It’s quite likely that these were traditional style tattoos, or American Traditional style

It’s identifiable by the thick black outlining of the image, and quite simple in detail but dramatic in color. Color isn’t necessarily required to consider a piece an American Traditional style, but it is common in these tattoos to have color. Usually the primaries or something similar: red, blue, yellow, green, et cetera.

There’s a kind of vintage look to it, especially because the imagery is usually pretty iconic, and it looks pretty flat, due to the lack of detail and shading.

It differs from minimalist and realistic in these ways, that it reads a little cartoon-like, and the lines are thick and bold.

There are so many styles that can speak to the specific tattoo that you want, but if you’re looking for something a little bolder but a little more iconic than realistic, the American trad tattoo is just right for you.

Traditional Tattoo Pain Levels

Since these are a bit thicker than most styles, I would say that these rank a little higher on the pain scale. Of course there are many elements that dictate how much a tattoo will hurt.

  • Location of the tattoo
  • The artist and how heavy their hand is while working
  • Color and shading
  • Personal pain tolerance

But even with all of these in mind, I would say that the traditional style tattoos don’t hurt as much as realism considering the detail in those pieces, but they may feel adjacent at times when it comes to the coloring portion, as it’s about level with shading with normal black ink.

Areas with softer skin or thinner skin on top of a bony spot will be a little more painful. Examples of this being your hands, ankles, inside your arm, spine… Anywhere that feels a bony or the skin is super soft, it’s going to add a few notches on the pain scale.

The traditional tattoo style has always been quite popular. Especially when you first take a step into a classic tattoo studio, the work on the walls and in the artist books and that cover the shop all over are usually in this style, and I know I feel personally inspired by it.
